Temporomandibular Dysfunction (TMD) Treatment

At Sa Pobla Mallorca Temporomandibular dysfunction also called TMD Syndrome, it is a disfunction of the Tempromandibular joint, Tempromandibular Disfunction (TMD) that causes aches, joint sounds and difficulty in carrying out routine activities such as talking or chewing and can be accompanied by a dislocation or subluxation of the joint.

The amount and variety of movements carried out by the Temporomandibular joint (opening and closing, shifting and lateralization of the mandible among others) make it a very complex joint and therefore the Temporomandibular dysfunction at Sa Pobla Mallorca can have several causes. The main symptoms associated with Temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) are: Difficulty/pain while chewing or biting, click or snap when opening and closing the mouth, head or ear pain and blockage or difficulty in moving the jaw.

How is the Temporomandibular Dysfunction treated?

There are various options available for treating the Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction and it will depend on the characteristics of each case, always choosing the most appropriate for the patient.

  • SPLINTS: To relieve the mandibular tension and avoid teeth damage. Nocturnal, to be used while you sleep or for daily use and aesthetic so that no one notices that you are wearing them for a better smile.
  • PHYSIOTHERAPY: To learn how to stretch, relax or massage the mandibular muscles. It’s a good method to reduce the discomforts and pain.
  • HABITS CORRECTION: Bruxism, teeth grinding and other habits worsen the TMD dysfunction. A bite splint will improve the situation eliminating discomforts.
  • BITE STUDY: In the event that the TMD is caused by a dental malocclusion, incorrect growth of the temporomandibular bone or postural alterations, natural or acquired.
  • PSYCHOLOGICAL TREATMENTS: To reduce the level of stress and anxiety which causes the temporomandibular tension and the grinding of the teeth.
  • SURGICAL TREATMENTS: The surgery of the TMD should only be considered in thoses cases where the conservative treatments (splints, physiotherapy,…) is not possibe or has not obtained the expected results. It’s a complex surgical operation that could have sequels on the joint’s functioning.
